Audience Research Through Focus Groups And Surveys

Above is the video that we completed of our focus group in which we played another student's music video which used the song 'Ike & Tina' by Jamie T. Our participants watched the majority of the music video and then were asked a series of questions surrounding what they liked and disliked about it.

Alongside our focus group, I decided to do more audience research and set out an online survey in which anyone could answer. I posted the link to my survey on twitter in the hope that I would get a more varied and interesting range of responses and not become biased on who I asked about their opinions. Above is a quick overview of my results, however, I have presented them slightly differently (below) if I want to look at the individual answers in much more detail.

From this task I have learnt that many different people have varying opinions and ideas of what a music video should include depending on their individual tastes and likes/dislikes. Despite this, the majority of the people that I interviewed or asked to be in my focus group had at least some elements that they like in common. Interestingly, a lot of people said that they would enjoy a more narrative based storyline along with engaging actors and a general sense of the lyrics matching the visuals. As for where people watch music videos, again the majority voted for websites such as Youtube. Following this, a large proportion of participants said they wouldn't download a music video with only a handful saying they might if they liked the video enough. From this we can see just how hard it is to make your video so much of a success that people would pay to download it.
