Music Video History

Music videos have been under continual development and progression over the decades with the introduction of new technology and editing techniques.

From doing this research I have learnt just how much music videos have changed over the decade. From the initial style of filming to the different and evolved editing technologies and techniques. I have witnessed how the very first videos were more concerned with the physical song at hand, and then the way that they evolved into very flamboyant and over the top dramatic showcases. Following this, the mainstream music industry seemed to fall into a pattern of producing videos that followed some kind of storyline or interesting plot. Continuing on from this approach, videos now appear to have rid themselves of this image of featuring a storyline and now focus on a very intriguing and seemingly unrelated videos that catch the audience's attention and draw them in. The way that they compose such random and creative videos is an effective method of really engaging with the audience as it makes people curious of what the video and then in turn the song and the artist entail.

Elements needed for my own music video
  • The classic colours of black and white create a very serious and effective video, however, I feel that you can lose some clarity and emotion when using monochrome. So, my video will need colour and take inspiration from slightly more modern day videos.
  • I like the idea of zooming out and exposing the technology and set up to create a sense of realism, so I could incorporate this into my video.
  • The good music videos tend to have a storyline behind them, so I could always integrate a slight background story.
  • I think that I may also include a sense of fun in my video, seen in videos such as Will Smith's 'Miami' as it lightens the mood and makes the video feel like it's more enjoyable to watch.
