Performance & Narrative Elements

The Strokes -'You Only live once' video is a slight example of a performance music video as there is a dramatic situation of liquid pouring into the environment in which the band are playing which adds a sense of danger and mystery to the video.

Benjamin Francis Leftwich - 'Atlas hands' is an example of a narrative based video as it shows the process of a boat being built, something which relates to the lyrics.

Ok Go - 'Here it goes again' is a very fun and uplifting music video with the singers doing a dance routine whilst on some running machines. This is an example of a performance based video and is probably my favourite as it has such a cheerful and happy theme.

Iggy Azalea - 'Work' follows the real life story of how Iggy became famous at first and therefore represents a narrative theme which is present throughout the video as a whole.

Justin Timberlake - 'What goes around comes around' is probably the most obvious example of a music video that features a narrative based approach as it tells the story of two fictional characters falling in love, also relating back to the song lyrics.

From this presentation, I have learnt that videos can vary extremely from having a performance based theme, to a narrative based theme, all the way to having no real theme at all. I decided to look in closer detail at Justin Timberlake's music video as I felt that it had a really affective concept with the twist of a classic tragedy/love story as a narrative based video. I have also learnt through studying Vladamir Propp's theory how different media language and components allow the audience to establish characters and their personalities. I identified some components within Timberlake's video that comply with this theory.
