Representation Analysis

Representation Analysis on PhotoPeach

From this task, I have learnt that a music video can be used to represent an artist in any way they choose to present themselves. Therefore, this could be anything in between wanting to portray a scandalous image to the opposite extreme of wanting to put out an image of innocence and that the artist is just like any other 'normal' person.

As shown in the presentation above, we can witness just a few examples of different impressions created by each video. with their very own techniques of achieving this.

  • The female domination theme as demonstrated by Beyonce is a very powerful element which really suits the genre of music that she is engaging in as it suits the hard beats of the song.
  • The artist's heritage theme as demonstrated by Nicki Minaj suits the melody of the song as the backgrounds and props completely compliment the video as it progresses.
  • The teen pop sensation theme that we see from Justin Bieber obviously goes hand in hand with the pop genre and in turn, completely suits the video to no end because of the stereotypical pop elements.
  • The gender theme that's shown by Shakira is effective as it ties in nicely with the cultural background to the video and props etc.
  • The rap theme in Snoop Dogg's video is very evident and lives up to the name as stereotypical rap culture within music videos. Therefore presenting Snoop in the way that he obviously desires to be presented.
  • Finally, the theme of identity which is present in Nickleback's video is an extremely interesting and inclusive video as it features so many different types of people and not just sticking to the stereotype and general expected attitude of the genre of rock and roll. This video is different as it strays from the stereotyped roots of rock and roll but still creates interest in the genre and the band who produce the music.
