Music Label Research

This exercise required a lot of research and took quite a bit of time to look into just how differently music labels make their music videos and the way in which they are able to do this. I chose to look in detail at one independent music label (XL - on the left hand side) and one from the three main oligopolies (Universal - on the right hand side). The main thing I found was that there is a big difference in the way that a label's music labels are way depending on the way they are portrayed in public, and of course whether they have much access to money and resources. Of course Universal make much more of a sizeable revenue than the independent labels such as XL and this affects the amount of opportunities they have in the technical side of making their music video. Saying this, XL tends to represent more original and alternative bands and artists. Simply because of this fact, naturally, their music videos will follow more of an interesting and different route with more eclectic tastes and representations. On the other hand Universal produce much more mainstream videos to compliment their style of music that their artists make. From this, I have learnt that although independents and oligopolies approach the technique of making music videos very differently from each other, they both work out for the image of the label.
